Kids face a hard time to understand a language. While growing up, he understands the language automatically. As soon as the infant is born the process of learning the language begins. It is purely the kid's efforts coordinated with nature. We don't know how complex the process is but we can figure out its complexity when we make a kid read alphabets or words.
When we compare a kid's ability to learn a language with the learning to read the language, it can be concluded that both the processes are very difficult.
Phonemic Awareness
This is the first baby step towards learning to read. A verbal speech can be disintegrated two separate sounds. A single unit of sound is known as a phoneme. A child needs to develop phonemic awareness. Thereafter, they can decode sounds, identity, analyst and later manipulates words.
Learning and Awareness of Alphabets
Needless to say, kids have to learn the alphabets. This a tiny steps towards reading readiness. But learning alphabets are one thing and its awareness is another. A pictorial chart can be easier to connect pictures with the letter.
The real challenge with the kids is how they connect the entire world with a limited 26 alphabets. Synchronization of sound with the letter is a difficult task. For all types of sounds, we have a-z letters. Tangible things like a chair can be seen and pictured. Kids understand that C stands for multiple things.
Kids usually accustomed to mug up these things.
The challenge becomes more challenging when it comes to memorizing the sound and identified the letters to frame a word.
The Learning stages
1. When children are capable of establishing the association of sound with the written word, it is assumed that they have successfully gone past to a very important phase of learning.
2. In the beginning just after learning the alphabets. Children remember the word, not its spelling. They remember it by its length or appearance. Cut, But, Put itlook similar at the same time confusing as well. Little-by little they start to distinguish the similar words.
3. A small word with short spelling can be remembered by them easily. Perhaps they recognized it in the first letter and last letter. For example, the word Bell can be remembered as B-ll.
The bottom line
The children learn how to read is a spontaneous process of-course with manual interference. The kids first go through several phases starting from phonemic awareness to consolidated alphabetic phase. How fast the kids learn to read it depends on how well the tutor is teaching them and children IQ level.
