Digestion and absorption of food

Every day we take lunch. We only enjoy food. We seldom bother about how it goes down into our digestive system. Dear children, you will be amazed at the process of food digestion. Our body gets prepared for digestion, as soon as we start thinking about food or we smell the food. The saliva comes in our mouth. Saliva mixes with the food. Saliva contains digestive enzymes. The digestion starts from here. Saliva moisturizes food to create a food bolus. Saliva makes the food swallowable. Food is the source of energy for our bodies. The food will only be absorbed if it breaks down into the simplest form. The entire process of breaking down the food taken is known as digestion.

The food is processed step by step systematically for digestion. Many organs of the body take place in the process, for example mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestine, etc. These body parts are coordinated well with each other. These body organs form a system is known as the digestive system.

Digestive System Organs
Esophagus
The food travels from mouth to stomach via the esophagus.
Stomach
The stomach acts like a sac to hold food. It also helps in grinding food. It produces acid and enzyme for further breaking down the food.
Liver
Digestion is one of the chief functions of the liver. The bile produced by the liver helps in digesting the fat in the small intestine.
Gall Bladder
It is the storage of bile and enzymes produced by the liver. Later these will be utilized for digestion.
Pancreas
Like the liver, it also helps in digestion. It secretes the insulin hormone to use glucose for the energy or store.
Small Intestine
The Nutrients and minerals in the food substance are absorbed in the small intestine.
Large Intestine
Like the small intestine, absorption is the work of the large intestine. It absorbs water.
Rectum
It is the place where waste food materials go out of the body.
